‘Produce 101’ Son Dongmyeong “I’m joining MAS ; I want to break down the prejudice against band’ (Interview)


RBW trainee Son Dongmyeong is joining MAS as a member and told us about his feelings and his determination.

At the end of Mnet ‘Produce 101 Season 2’, Zenith News met for an interview with the RBW trainees Lee Gunhee, Lee Gunmin, Yeo Hwanwoong, Son Dongmyeong at Neonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul where is located Zenith News’ building.

Son Dongmyeong is joining the band MAS, and is preparing to debut in the second half of the year. Son Dongmyeong said, “More than everything, I’m thankful and I have a lot of responsibilities.”

He added, “To be honest, there is this perception that compared to idol groups, band produce less mainstream music. However, I want to break this image and those stereotypes about bands. I want to help,” before adding with determination, “We talked about it with the members. That we should make music that has a familiar image. When talking about K-Pop people think of idols but I want to make them aware that there are also bands in K-Pop.”

Son Dongmyeong took up the idol challenge(?) in “Produce 101 Season 2”. To the question “Now we can’t see the Dongmyeong doing idol performance anymore” he answered with a smile, “I can dance at any time. During the first evaluation, while performing I fall into the illusion that I had become an idol. I was so happy. Even it was the first and last stage I could do with the hyungs, it’s really precious (to me) and I’m grateful.”

Son Dongmyeong also showed affection to his members. He said, “When I first began doing music, it was in this band. I first started to think that I wanted to do music when I was in 2nd year of middle school* and I went to a music academy. It was when I met the hyungs that are in the band now.”

Meanwhile, the band that Son Dongmyeong is joining, MAS, has been building up its skills even before debut through buskings and live performance. They’re already known as as a talented band in the Hongdae band scene.
