The 4 RBW trainees of ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ “It’s a new beginning” [Interview]


Interview: Produce 101 Season 2 RBW Lee Gunmin Yeo Hwawoong Son Dongmyeong Lee Gunhee

We can’t forget the proverb ‘Genius displays itself even in childhood’ when we’re talking about the cable TV program Mnet’s ‘Produce 101 Season 2’. The 101 idols in the making who participated in this audition had a lot of potential since childhood.

The RBW trainees Yeo Hwanwoong (20)*, Lee Gunmin (22)*, Seo Dongmyeong (19)* also made an appearance with Lee Gunhee in ‘Produce 101 Season 2’. Yeo Hwanwoong and Lee Gunmin have been training for 1 year and 2 months. Son Dongmyeong has been in a band for 2 years, taking care of the vocals and keyboard. Ironically, Lee Gunhee was the trainee with the best rank. He received attention and had a longer appearance by finishing the program 33rd, compared to Yeo Hwanwoong, Lee Gunmin and Son Dongmyeong who ended up being 42nd, 96th, and 68th.

 (…) Son Dongmyeong stressed, “I’ve really learned so much. I think it was really one of the precious experience of my life. Some unforgettable memories.”

The four (boys) went to the idols agency RBW, who create idol groups who have individuality. The group MAMAMOO who debuted in 2014 revealed its strengths (in) vocal and performance on stage and raised to fame. The boy group VROMANCE received the nickname of ‘harmony dispenser’ and gained popularity.

Similar expectations were raised for the four of them preparing their group performance, that since their first appearance in ‘Produce 101 Season 2’. They became MAMAMOO and VROMANCE’ successor full of personality(?).

But the four of them waved their hands, “We still don’t know.” (…)

Son Dongmyeong’ situation is a bit different from the others. It was announced that he will be the first to debut, by joining the band MAS in the second half of the year. He said, “We first formed the band in my 3rd year of middle school** with the hyungs and we’ve been in it since then. I received a good opportunity last year(?). We released an album really important to me, which is dedicated to the comfort women. The profits gained through buskings etc. went to them,” before adding, “Through this good opportunity I’m joining this band again. First of all, I’m really happy and I’ll try harder to show you an even better image.”

Even if there are no specific plans revealed except for Son Dongmyeong, all of the boys gained a lot from ‘Produce 101 Season 2’. Even if it was a short period of hard training where they improved their singing and dancing abilities, it was really meaningful (because) they were able to build up experiences on stage.

(…) As expected, Son Dongmyeong said, “I think I’ve learned in 4 months what I couldn’t learn for several years in a practice room,” adding with a smile, “When we started the show, we were four who couldn’t put make-up on but after a few months of watching the show we couldn’t stand it and we decided to do it. I think I have talent for it.”


They are kids who went back to the starting line after the end of the show but their ‘dream’ didn’t change. (…) 

Lastly, Son Dongmyeong said, “I’m in a band but actually for the general public of our country the name band is more associated with indie music compared to idols. We still don’t have much experience. But my big goal is that I want to change this perception (people have) of band. This way after familiarizing (the public) with bands(?), I want to make my dream come true and show my happiness to my parents. It’s my goal."
